Job timing

Time on the Job

Most houses in Byron went up after 1998, which puts a lot of doors here well past the builder-grade one-piece and extension-spring setups you still find on older housing stock closer to the lake.

Common section sizes

These are steel sectional doors, usually insulated, running on standard torsion hardware. That's good news for a panel swap: the section sizes are common stock, not a custom eight-foot flat panel from a door nobody makes parts for anymore.

Half-day single-section swap

Once we've got the right panel loaded and we're on site, pulling the damaged section, unbolting the hinges and rollers, and bolting in the replacement is a half-day job for a single-section swap on a standard double door.

Multi-panel alignment rechecks

Multi-panel damage, or a panel that's cracked along a seam where the insulation foam has shifted, takes longer because we're re-checking alignment on every hinge point the new section touches, not just the one that broke. We don't pad that estimate to sound efficient - it depends on what's actually bent and whether the track took a hit along with the panel.

Parts We Carry

For houses built in the late 1990s and after, the sizing is predictable: standard steel sections, factory-primed or pre-finished, matched to common door widths rather than the odd narrow openings you see on pre-war construction. We stock the panel profiles that fit that era of door. Because this area sits in a cold-weather climate band with real winter severity, most of what went in originally was insulated steel, not the thin single-skin panel some older stock still carries, so a replacement section usually needs to match an existing polystyrene or polyurethane core rather than being a plain steel skin. We carry both. What we don't carry on the truck is every discontinued color and every obsolete panel profile a door manufacturer stopped making years back - if your door is an older import or a builder-closeout model, we order the matching section and that adds lead time. We'll tell you that up front instead of installing something close enough and hoping you don't notice the seam.

The repair

What the Repair Takes

The job starts with pulling the damaged panel without disturbing the spring tension on the rest of the door - on a double door with standard torsion springs, that means clamping the track and working one section at a time.

  1. Hinge removal and install

We unbolt the hinges connecting the damaged panel to the sections above and below it, slide the rollers free of the track, and lift the section out. The new panel goes in the same way, in reverse, with new hinge bolts if the old ones show wear rather than reusing hardware that's already stretched.

  2. Track plumb recheck

Then we recheck the track alignment on both sides, because a bent panel often means the roller pulled the track slightly out of plumb even if the track itself looks fine standing back.

  3. Hand-cycling before opener

Last step is cycling the door a dozen times by hand before we ever hit the opener, watching for drag or a roller that binds. If something's off, we find it before you're relying on an opener motor to force it through.

Symptoms

The Symptom

A blue house with an attached garage and a dark blue garage door.

The panel damage we see most on newer insulated steel doors isn't a full-on dent from a bumper - it's a crease along a seam, usually from a ladder, a bike, or a kid's basketball catching the bottom third of a section and folding the steel skin without breaking through it. On an insulated panel that crease often pulls the foam core with it, so the section bows slightly even after the visible dent looks minor. The other common one is a hinge pull: the screws at a hinge point work loose or strip the pre-drilled holes, and the panel starts to sag at that joint every time the door cycles. Both are repairable with a section swap. What's not worth fixing is a panel that's cracked clean through near a hinge after years of that joint flexing - at that point you're replacing the hardware anyway, and a patch job on a cracked section won't hold through another Michigan winter.

How to Book

We run out of Holland, about 19 miles from Byron, so we're not a local storefront you can walk into - we load the panel, drive out, and do the swap on site. To get a panel matched correctly before we come out, we need the door's brand, the panel's width and height, and whether it's insulated - a photo of the damaged section and the data plate on the inside of the door helps more than a description over the phone. You can see the full range of what we handle in this area on our Byron garage door page, and if what you're dealing with is bigger than one panel - several sections, a bent track, or an opener that's struggling along with the damage - that's covered on our panel replacement page for Holland.

Watch-outs

The Complications

Color match is the complication we can't always promise. Steel panels fade with UV exposure over the years, and a brand-new section next to twenty-year-old painted steel will usually show a visible line even when the paint code matches on paper.

Nonstandard width sizing

We tell people that up front rather than let them assume a seamless match. The other complication is sizing on anything that isn't a standard door width - some builder closeout models and a handful of older imported doors use section heights that aren't common stock, and those have to be special-ordered, which adds time we can't shorten by driving faster.

Track damage transfers

If the track or the opener took damage along with the panel, we flag that separately, because bolting a new section onto a bent track just transfers the problem to the new part.

Whole-door cost comparison

On a door that's taken enough damage across multiple panels, replacing the whole door can end up cheaper than special-ordering three or four matched sections - we'll say so if that's where the numbers land.

Questions

Common questions

Will a replacement panel match the color of my existing door exactly

Not always. Steel fades with sun exposure over the years, so even the correct paint code on a new section can look slightly different next to an older, faded panel. We'll tell you before the job if we expect a visible line, rather than let you find out after installation.

How long does a single panel swap take once you're on site

For a standard double door with one damaged section, figure a half-day once we're on site with the right panel loaded. Multi-section damage or a bent track alongside the panel takes longer, since we recheck alignment at every hinge point the new section touches.

Do you carry panels for older doors too, or just newer builds

We stock common steel sectional profiles that fit most doors built from the late 1990s on. Older or discontinued profiles, including some builder-closeout models, have to be special-ordered, which adds lead time we'll quote before we book the job.

Is it ever better to replace the whole door instead of just the panel

Yes, if damage spans multiple sections or the track and hardware are compromised along with the panel. Special-ordering three or four matched sections can cost close to a full door replacement, and we'll say so if that's where the numbers land instead of pushing a patch repair.
